If studying in Spain is on your 10-year life plan, marked in bright yellow, we can reassure you, you won’t be short of options when it comes to finding a university.
Spain is already one of Europe’s most popular destinations for international students, combining high-ranked universities with the inevitable desire to explore its famous cities, rich culture and live and study in a Spanish-speaking country – after all with about 6.3% of the global population speaking Spanish, it is one of the most popular languages to take as an elective.
So, no surprise here when the latest QS World University Rankings 2027 show that Spanish universities are making a strong impression internationally.
There are 15 Spanish universities in the world’s top 500, including two in the top 200.
That means students looking at Spain have plenty of universities to choose from across the country. Whether you’re interested in studying in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Alicante, Valencia, Granada, or somewhere else entirely, it is likely that you’ll be able to find a course of interest. And, once you’ve chosen and been accepted for your dream degree, don’t forget to look up your student accommodation options with Orla.
But Spain’s popularity with young people extends beyond university rankings and fantastic degree options, with the added benefit of 4,900km of coastline for after-lecture sunbathing. The country is one of Europe’s biggest destinations for international students, students travelling for university exchange and Erasmus visits.
In fact, in 2022, Spain was the most popular destination in the EU for credit-mobile graduates, attracting 11.1% of all EU credit-mobile graduates. And, to simplify it a bit, credit mobility refers to students temporarily studying abroad as part of a degree at their home university, normally with the credits counting towards their qualification.
So, which are the best universities in Spain, and what should international students know before choosing where to study?
Why Study at a University in Spain?

Studying in Spain cannot just be measured by the university rankings, it offeres something completely different, a way of experiencing student life rooted in freedom and just as one would imagine it.
Student life moves beyond the lecture hall and takes meaning in the everyday choices one makes the first time they move away from home. It means spending an afternoon studying in a café you discovered accidentally around the corner from your student accommodation. It means inviting your new flatmates for tapas in the evening, or travelling to another city at the weekend just to play beach volleyball there.
There is also a sense of variety. Students can choose between the fast pace of Madrid, the creative international feel of Barcelona, the relaxed atmosphere of Valencia or the historic character of cities such as Granada and Seville. Each offers a different version of the Spanish experience.
In Spain, education expands beyond the classroom, combining the academic study with independence, travel and a country that is as rich as culture as its regions are vast.
