KU Leuven (Belgium)
2027 Ranking: 59th
Belgium enters the rankings with KU Leuven ranked 59th worldwide, making it Belgium’s representative among Europe’s highest-ranked institutions.
The university improved slightly from 60th place, demonstrating steady progress in a highly competitive ranking environment. Its leading slogan is “Inspiring the outstanding” and with major breakthrough research like a record-breaking solar hydrogen panel and an alumni list featuring three Nobel laureates, this is definitely not an empty claim.
As a fully comprehensive university with very high research activity, KU Leuven continues to maintain a strong international reputation.
University of Amsterdam (Netherlands)
2027 Ranking: 60th
Although the university moved from 53rd place last year, it remains one of the Netherlands’ leading institutions and one of the strongest universities in Europe overall.
In a list of STEM-focused universities, University of Amsterdam stands out with its Communication Science and Media Studies programs, which are frequently ranked number one in the world. It is also a major hub for applied AI and Computer Sciences, securing its future – proof status.

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Germany)
2027 Ranking: 61st
The university experienced a modest change from 58th place but remains among Germany’s highest-ranked institutions. As a fully comprehensive university with very high research activity, it continues to enjoy a strong international reputation.
Lund University (Sweden)
2027 Ranking: 71st
Another 10 positions and we have our first Nordic contender. Lund University ranked 71st globally and recorded a small improvement from 72nd place.
Located in Sweden, the university continues to represent the strength of Scandinavian higher education. Its steady upward movement reflects consistent performance and ongoing international recognition. In 2026 it also ranked as 1st in the world for sustainability and therefore it comes as no surprise that it is known for its excellence in environmental sciences, geography and research.
For students considering Sweden, Lund remains one of the country’s leading universities located in a quaint historical town.
Sorbonne University (France)
2027 Ranking: 73rd
One of Europe’s oldest and most highly-regarded and widely known universities, the Sorbonne University in Paris, secured 73rd place worldwide.
The university improved slightly compared with its previous position and continues to strengthen France’s presence within the global top 100. From a centre for Arts and Humanities to Medicine and Science, it is a vibrant educational institution, home to over 53,000 students, including roughly 11,500 international students.
Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin (Ireland)
2027 Ranking: 75th
Ireland’s oldest university, Trinity College Dublin, maintained its position at 75th worldwide.
With notable alumni like Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett it is no surprise its strong traditions and reputation in the Arts, Humanities and Literature remain to this day. Consistency at this level is notable, particularly given the competition among universities internationally. Trinity’s stable ranking reflects its long-standing reputation and continued academic strength.

2027 Ranking: 76th
While the university moved from 70th place, it continues to hold a strong position among Europe’s leading institutions and secures yet another placement in the top 100 for France, demonstrating its continuing influence in global higher education.
The university remains an important part of France’s internationally recognised STEM sector, often ranked in top (even top 1) positions for Mathematics and Physics and sometimes referred to as “The French Silicon Valley”.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden)
2027 Ranking: 82nd
Back to Scandinavia we go – the university previously held 78th place but remains comfortably inside the global top 100.
Students seeking a research-intensive study environment often consider KTH among Sweden’s strongest options. The university itself boasts as Sweden’s largest technical university. A red-brick university in its own right (the building is famously made of red bricks), this university upholds the highest standards of European education.
Universität Heidelberg (Germany)
2027 Ranking: 86nd
Germany’s oldest university was founded in 1386 and is a renowned research centre with teaching excellence in medicine, life sciences, physics, and the humanities, boasting ties to numerous Nobel laureates.
The university moved from 80th place but continues to be one of Germany’s leading institutions highlighting the strength of the country’s higher education system.
Politecnico di Milano (Italy)
2027 Ranking: 87nd
Arriving at Italy, Politecnico di Milano was one of the standout performers among European universities this year.
The university climbed from 98th place to 87th, making one of the most significant improvements within the European top 100 group.
This achievement is particularly important because it gives Italy a stronger hold inside the world’s top 100 and demonstrates the continuous positive momentum within the country’s higher education sector. PoliMi as otherwise known, is Italy’s largest technical university, globally renowned for its elite programs in Engineering, Architecture, and Industrial Design.
And it should come as no surprise, as it leans into Milan’’s luxury, furniture and manufacturing industries and history.
Uppsala University (Sweden)
2027 Ranking: 87th
Sharing the 87th place (yes, that is possible in the QS World Rankings), another European contender, and another Sweden entry. 87 must have been the ranking marking the biggest improvers as Uppsala University also recorded a notable forward movement.
The university rose from 93rd to 87th place, helping strengthen Sweden’s representation among the world’s leading institutions. The oldest university in the Nordics boasts significant scientific legacy, having the names of Carl Linnaeus (creator of modern taxonomy) and Andres Celsius (inventor of the temperature scale we use on this side of the pond) amongst its alumni roster.
University of Copenhagen (Denmark)
2027 Ranking: 90th
The University of Copenhagen ranked 90th globally and achieved one of the most impressive improvements in the entire European top 100 list.
The university moved from 101st place into the top 100 for the first time in this ranking cycle.
Crossing the top-100 threshold is a significant milestone and highlights Denmark’s growing visibility in global higher education. It is Denmark’s oldest and largest university, particularly known for Meidcine and Health Sciences.
Freie Universitaet Berlin (Germany)
2027 Ranking: 98th
Although it moved from 88th place, the university successfully retained its position among the world’s top 100 institutions, strengthening Germany’s presence on the global educational scene.
Known for its Political Sciences and International Relations programmes, it originated as a “Free University” during the early Cold War, maintaining a strong tradition of academic liberty and a highly globalised campus.
University of Zurich (Switzerland)
2027 Ranking: 98th
Another shared position in the top 100 rankings, as The University of Zurich ranked 98th worldwide alongside Freie Universitaet Berlin.
The university improved slightly from 100th place, helping strengthen Switzerland’s already impressive performance in the rankings.
University College Dublin (Ireland)
2027 Ranking: 100th
Another big jump both in the QS World Rankings and for Ireland overall, the University College Dublin rounds out the European top 100 by securing 100th place globally.
Perhaps most notably, the university improved dramatically from 118th place in the previous rankings. This represents one of the strongest improvements among European institutions this year.
It’s Irelan’s largest university and known for the high percentages of graduate employability. The Sutherland School of Law has historically trained the majority of Ireland’s political and legal leaders.
What The QS World Rankings Mean for Students?
One of the biggest takeaways from this year’s rankings is the continued strength and diversity of European higher education.
While countries such as Switzerland, Germany and France remain well represented, there are also encouraging stories from Ireland, Denmark, Sweden and Italy. Universities including Politecnico di Milano, University College Dublin, University of Copenhagen and Uppsala University all recorded particularly impressive improvements.
For students, rankings should never be the only factor when choosing a university. However, they can provide valuable insight into institutions that are performing strongly on an international level.
